Well, last night Maurizio and I decided to partake in all the brouhaha that is St. Patrick’s Day, and we went out for some Guinness. I have to say the American students were out in full force and the Italians, adults and teenagers alike, were not far behind.
Maurizio and I went to the Old Stove by the Duomo and The Lions Pub, which is closer to our apartment. At the Old Stove we pushed through the crowds and after about 15 mins finally got our Guinness and found a table for 2 at the entrance of the bar, which was perfect because we were able to see all the people who were coming and going. So the most interesting things we saw:
- American college boys wearing fake bushy eyebrows and fake bushy mustaches. They weren’t green, just normal fake hair. I didn’t get it at all. There must have been like 10+ of these guys.
- Over 100 Guinness “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” top hats
- 2 girls dressed as, what we thought, were strippers. They were wearing long shirts without tights or pants and the shirts just barely covered their butts. One girl was wearing diamond-studded shoes. Then they proceeded to faux pole dance to Don McLean’s American Pie. CLASSY!
- A group of adult Italians taking shots, drinking beer, and smoking cigarettes while their 5 year old sat close by in a stroller. Hmmmm…nice!
- Two Italian teenagers asking the street sweeper for a ride
- Two drunk Italian guys parking their car in a Piazza and just barely stopping short of hitting the no parking sign.
All in All Maurizio and I had a great time of drinking beer and people watching.
the picture below shows the group of Italians at the bar with their kid in the stroller. It was around midnight!
Today, I had to run a lot of errands. Well, really only 2 big ones but I had to travel to different parts of the city and on foot this takes up quite a bit of time. So I went to the sports store to buy a duffle bag for Maurizio and I and then had to go back to the store I went to on Tuesday to buy my nieces birthday present that went on sale today. I accomplished both so that was a plus. Maurizio and I are leaving tomorrow morning for an overnight trip to Lucca. We will be going to Collodi, home of Pinocchio, then staying the night in Lucca. I am super excited to get out of Florence for the night. So in a couple days I will have, hopefully, some fun things to post about these two cities.
This is gross, but I had to post it:
On the way home from the store I passed through the park at Piazza d’Azeglio and couldn’t believe what I saw. I saw a woman holding her 4-5 year old under the arms while the child propped her feet on the tree. Her pants were around her ankles and she was taking a dump!!! After she was finished, the woman put her down then pulled out a tissue packet and put a tissue on top of the poop, then wiped the girls bottom with another tissue. When the lady was through wiping the child’s bottom she threw that tissue down on the ground, pulled up the girls pants and they went off on their merry way!!! WONDERFUL!!!
